Observations, and some helpful hints. When backpacking with children, keep the following points in mind:

1) Plan a route with a definite objective, such as a lake, for the campsite.

2) Plan a trip will within the capabilities of all the children and adults participating.

3) Include the children's favorite foods in the menus.

4) Pare down equipment to the absolute essentials to avoid excessively heavy packs.

5) Make sure children wear whistles.

6) Use alternative means of transportation such as boats or trains to maximize wilderness experience and minimize carrying loads.

7) Keep some long-winded stories in mind.

8) Develop a plan of what you will do in case of emergency.

9) Always treat the water you drink.

10) Be flexible and have fun!
