Hiking - Observations & Hints

Outdoor Travel

Hiking observations, and some helpful hints

1) Choose an attractive objective for the hike.

2) If your child is of marginal hiking age, take along a carrier so that you can carry him or her if necessary.

3) Take adequate rain gear. It can make the difference between a pleasant hike on a damp day and a cold, wet, miserable experience.

4) Always carry extra hats, mittens, and jackets in case of weather changes.

5) Use sun hats, sunglasses, and sunblock to protect your children's sensitive skin and eyes.

6) Take lots of snack and lunch breaks. They are especially important to keep children's bodies well-fueled and their blood sugar level from dropping too low.

7) Take along some extra treats to use as encouragement to hike up the next-to-last hill.

8) Don't be overly ambitious-plan a route that allows time for examining flowers and splashing in streams.

9) Always remember: Safety first.
