PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, Canada: A Fact Sheet.
Prince Edward Island is a one-island Province of Canada which lies cradled in the bottom of the Gulf of St. Lawrence above Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. It's just 170 miles (280 km) from the western to eastern tip, so allow time to explore the entire Province, including the capitol, Charlottetown.
Being an island, most folks arrive by air or car ferry. If you don't bring your own car, plan to rent one-a task best done in Charlottetown or Summerside. There are various bus, bike or taxi tours available as well.
In 1997, a bridge will be completed to the mainland. The Northumberland Strait Crossing Project is a conscious effort to satisfy a need within the complete requirements of this modern world: the most current engineering knowledge, government and private sector demands, environmental concerns and economic desires. Visit the Documentation Centre at 4 Harbourside, Suite 1, in Charlottetown, or call (902) 566-2262, for more information and to find out about tours of the construction area.
Since Prince Edward Island-or PEI-is a Canadian Province, Canadian laws and currency are in effect. At present the U.S. dollar is higher than the Canadian dollar. Residents of the U.S. can apply for a refund on the 7% Goods and Services Tax charged in Canada upon return home, so KEEP ALL RECEIPTS and contact Revenue Canada for further information.
