Spectacular Bahamas Resort Offers Kids Totally Different Experience
Start with a living, million-gallon saltwater habitat (the world's largest outdoor, open water aquarium, complete with an underwater walk through a shark lagoon, giant sea turtles and thousands of tropical fish), and combine it with five swimming pools (* including one just for youngsters *), a magical tropical river ride, the Goombay Baths & Slides and miles of glorious sandy beach. The focal point of the resort is the 14-acre Atlantis Waterscape. There are six marine life exhibit lagoons including a Predator Lagoon with huge sharks, rays and barracuda, more than 40 waterfalls, five swimming pools, two underground grottos for underwater wildlife observation, an underwater clear pedestrian tube for up-close and personal views of sharks, a suspension bridge, and artificial coral reefs. Atlantis even has its own fish curator for the 35,000 pounds of tropical fish guests, representing more than 100 species. More than three million gallons of water are recycled four times a day to keep them all happy. Six full-time aquarium employees are also certified divers and are continually involved in catching marine life of all varieties for the resort's displays.
Kids will also enjoy taking part in the resort's sea turtle relocation and recovery project. In order to help preserve endangered species, the aquarium staff supervises a breeding program which provides wild turtles with a nesting area called Turtle Beach and then hatchlings are released back to the ocean under licensed, controlled conditions.
But there's more to do than observe sea creatures at Atlantis. In addition to the supervised children's pool there is the Goombay Baths & Slides, a series of pools connected by a walkway that becomes an adventure due to computer-controlled geysers, fountains and other surprises. One of the pools is beneath a waterfall, another has mushroom fountains. They all combine to be a delightful family water experience.
If that's not enough, there's a delightful Atlantis River Ride that meanders through the lagoons, providing a relaxing ride on a gentle current through the tropical landscape. The Cascades Lagoon is a series of saltwater pools where kids and tumble from one to another. And Paradise Lagoon, a natural 10-acre quiet body of salt water is the ideal place to try snorkeling and swimming.
Atlantis also features a special, supervised CHILDREN'S PROGRAM CALLED CAMP PARADISE which provides not only a place where kids can share snacks and informal meals in an upbeat atmosphere with their peers, but a comprehensive schedule of activities for ages five through 12. Swimming and searching for buried treasure, authentic Bahamian crafts, nature walks, first-run movies and cartoons, pirate stories and games are among the possibilities. Others include air hockey and Nintendo, Sega and other computer games, face painting, talent shows, sand castle building, and ice cream contests. The 3,000 square-foot Camp even has its own mascot, Chickcharnie, a traditional Bahamian bird.
The Camp is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. "Nite Life" is the evening program, from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. during season and holidays. There is a charge for a full day of fun at Camp Paradise.
