GRANDMOTHER'S OLD FASHIONED SUGAR COOKIES

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
2-1/4 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt (if using unsalted butter)
1 tsp vanilla

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Sift baking powder, flour, salt (if using), and nutmeg together and add to creamed mixture a little at a time. Add vanilla. Mix.

Roll out as for cookies. Cut with round biscuit cutter. Bake on greased and floured cookie sheet in preheated 350 degree oven until light brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Be careful not to overbake. If you want to glaze them, sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar before baking.
