Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

These are almost as fun to make as they are to eat. Do expect to get your hands messy.

CHOCOLATE THUMBPRINT COOKIES

Mix well:

1/2 cup soft shortening or 1 cube butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 square unsweetened chocolate, melted

Stir in:
1 cup sifted flour
1/4 tsp salt

Roll batter into 1-teaspoon balls. Beat egg white with fork and dip balls in egg. Roll balls in granulated sugar.

Place on greased cookie sheet. Press thumb into center of each.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool slightly before taking off sheet (or they will fall apart). It may take a batch or two to get a good feel for how deeply you want to press in the center.

Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
