THE WHITE BARN INN
One of the interesting features of East Coast vacation spots from New York northward is the number of historic farm houses that have been restored and converted to lodgings. An example of this is the White Barn Inn which is situated between woodlands and the rugged shoreline of Maine.
The original hardwood floors of the Inn, built in 1840, are still in place, particularly in the lobby, which is also graced by 19th-century antiques. Color-coordinated fabrics and wall coverings have been used in the guest rooms as well as in the suites. Suites also have king-size, four-poster beds, working fireplaces, over-sized marble bathrooms, whirlpool baths, televisions, armoires, phones, period furnishings, fresh flowers, and a complimentary basket of fresh fruit. Among the amenities are twice-daily maid service and thick robes.
The restaurant is in a carefully restored three-story barn, with large picture windows at either end. Tables are set with Villeroy and Boch China, crystal stemware and fresh flowers. Guests dine by candle light and are entertained by a pianist as they wait for their choices from the menu which promises to live up to the elegant surroundings. Dinner might begin with Foie Gras. The entree of choice is--what else--a steamed Maine Lobster on fresh fettucine, with carrots and ginger in a spicy honey sherry vinegar sauce. For dessert there is a rich chocolate mousse in a thin pastry crust with toasted hazelnuts and Frangelico whipped cream. There is a wine list as well as one of liqueurs, ports and cognacs.
Complimentary afternoon tea with fresh patisseries is served daily to hotel guests. Outdoor activities available are: riding one of the Inn's bicycles along a stunning stretch of coast line, sailing, deep sea fishing, ocean swimming, whale watching, monastery tours, or a five-minute walk to the heart of Kennebunkport with its antique shops, theater and galleries.
The White Barn Inn was named one of the top "Inns of the Year" for 1993 by Country Inns Magazine and their restaurant was rated 5 diamonds by AAA.
