The Belle Haven neighborhood in Greenwich is famous for being an elite residential area. One of its great attractions is The Homestead Inn, set among three acres of oaks and maples. Like many historical landmarks, it has had numerous owners, some of whom made structural changes. It fell into disrepair, until eventually it was lovingly and meticulously restored to the New England Colonial Farmhouse style, complete with the wrap-around porch and cupola that it was originally intended to have.
The lobby and dining room each have fireplaces. Ceilings are high, with 200-year-old hand-hewn exposed beams. Antiques decorate the lobby and directly behind it is the small backgammon room with its own fireplace.
No two guest rooms are alike; each has an individual theme. Some have exposed beam ceilings. Many have Colonial antiques and canopy beds. All have such modern amenities as color TV, clock radio and electric blanket. Some have showers only, rather than bath tubs.
As you enter La Grange (the dining room) and take note of tables set with Wedgewood China it is hard to imagine that this was once the barn. There are two small private dining rooms and an enclosed dining porch. Dinner may begin with an hors d'oeuvres ofMaryland Crab Cake. A favorite entree is Veal Medallion with wild mushrooms. Everybody's favorite dessert is Triple Chocolate Layer Cake. There is an excellent wine list from which to choose.
There are diversions to please almost everyone. There is fabulous shopping in Greenwich, or you might find one of the blue-cushioned white wicker settees that dot the porch--the ideal place to enjoy a complimentary glass of fresh lemonade as you while away a warm summer afternoon.
