Italian design, craftsmanship, cuisine and staff are perfectly integrated at the Donatello a remarkable hotel in the heart of San Francisco's fashionable shopping and theatre district. The Italian sculptor Donatello was a major figure in 15th-Century Renaissance art, and the hotel bearing his name reflects classic European spirit.
The interiors, designed by Andrew Delfino, blend travertine marble, Venetian glass and European antiques. The spacious guest rooms are luxuriously decorated in soft pastels and designer prints, with Ming and Biedermeier furnishings. In the marble-clad baths you will find fine soaps and full-length terry cloth robes. Our favorite suite has a bedroom done in cream color with dark details, with a fine corner view. The living room has walls covered in Fortuny fabrics, couches in pale rose, and an impressive marble entryway.
Ristorante Donatello has been an international success since the day it opened. Its two dining rooms are done in Fortuny fabrics with Veronese marble floors. The atmosphere, while elegant and formal, maintains an intimate ambiance and charm.
A springtime dinner opened with a creamy risotto with truffles and wild mushrooms, followed by fresh monkfish sauteed with two pepper sauces, accompanied by Favorita di Santa Vittoria d'Alba. The next course was medallions of veal sauteed with fresh sage and butter. Dessert was dark chocolate fondant in a light orange-scented custard, delicious with Moscato Rosa. The feast would have impressed even the Medici. Besides daily special dinners such as this, there is an extensive a la carte menu.
