Situated on a private 60-acre island surrounded lush tropical gardens and bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, Hawk's Cay Resort benefits from its excellent location midway down the Florida Keys chain, its relaxed atmosphere, year-round temperate climate, and unique water amenities.
Built in the late 1950's and completely renovated in 1983, the rambling 176-room West Indies-style hotel sits in the middle of its own private island. Guests here have included three presidents as well as many Hollywood notables.
Having recently undergone a half-million-dollar refurbishment, the resort now has an executive boardroom which seats 14. Other changes in the conference center include new carpeting and wallpaper throughout. The guestrooms have also received a makeover with new carpet, wallpaper and bedding. In addition, mini-refrigerators have been added to all rooms and a gourmet section is now part of the resort's gift shop in the lobby. A selection of fresh cheeses, imported cookies and crackers, imported beers and wine splits, fruits and nuts are available.
Charter fishing excursions from the hotel's marina offer some of the world's best big-game fishing. Marlin, wahoo and tuna are plentiful, and the resort record sailfish catch weighed in at 83 pounds. Other activities include skin diving, snorkeling, sailing and bicycling. The tennis courts are surrounded by tropical gardens, and the nearby 18-hole Sombrero Golf Course extends membership privileges to guests.
The four restaurants at Hawk's Cay serve superb fresh-from-the-sea fish dinners. And for dessert-Key lime pie, of course. With four large meeting rooms, Hawk's Cay is ideally equipped for conferences. In 1989 the renovations included a new Italian Restaurant, "Porto Cayo," serving specialties such as Grouper Chardonnay and Seafood Lasagna.
