CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Historic Wilmington and North Carolina's Cape Fear Coast are among the most historically significant African-American regions in the United States. African-American ancestry is traced back to the 1700s, and several historical sites still exist, such as the Cape Fear Museum, Bellamy Mansion, and Thalian Hall, as well as churches, cemeteries, homes and historical markers. During February, festivals and special events are scheduled to celebrate Black History Month. Other events that commemorate Black history take place throughout the year. Here's a sampling of just a few events:


Feb. 1-28: GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER TRUNK EXHIBIT. This traveling exhibit includes a variety of George Washington Carver's (1865-1943) inventions (shampoo, synthetic sugar, peanut butter, etc.), hands-on materials, photographs, books & posters, period costumes, games, etc. Tues.-Sat. 10am-5pm. Admission: $3.50/person. Wilmington Children's Museum, Wilmington, (910) 254-3534.

Feb. 15: INTERCULTURAL FESTIVAL. A celebration highlighting cultures & countries represented in Wilmington & UNCW. Food, dancing, music, exhibits showcase the rich cultural diversity of the area. UNCW campus. (910) 962-7009.

Feb. 16: "A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM." Join local composer/musician Grenoldo Frazier for a screening/discussion of the documentary A Great Day in Harlem (1994) with rare footage, interviews, performances of 1950s jazz music legends. Sponsor: Wilmington NC Chapter of The Links. 2pm. Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, (910) 395-5999.

Feb. 28: A LITTLE TASTE OF ART SERIES. Daphne Holmes, Cameron Art Museum curator of education, explores the painting "Double Dare" by African American Dance Ensemble Residency Project artist William T. Williams. Free with Museum admission. 6pm, Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, (910) 395-5999.
