ROADS ARE GOOD: NATIVE VOICES ON LIFE AND CULTURE This
inaugural exhibition at the George Gustav Heye Center in New
York City presents the worldviews of indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere
as reflected in more than 300 objects chosen by twenty-three Native Americans
to illustrate the diversity and continuity of Native cultures. Among the objects
on view are bandolier bags from the Ojibwe; robes and a parasol from the Lakota;
and wood carvings from the Kwakiutl of British Columbia. | ![]() |
| For
the exhibition and book All Roads Are Good: Native Voices on Life and Culture,
respected singers, storytellers, artists, elders, and scholars from Native cultures
throughout the Americas were invited to the museum to choose objects of personal
meaning to them. In this evocative blend of first-person narratives, stunning
illustrations, and historic photographs, Native voices celebrate American Indian
cultures and their perseverance in the contemporary landscape. Artisans, tribal leaders, a playwright, an architect, an archaeologist, and other professionals ponder Indian concepts of time, nature, the Creator, and the function of art. In intimate, distinct voices, they address their concerns about the fragmentation of Indian society, the commercialization of its arts, and the ways in which young Native Americans can express the conflicts and aspirations of their generation. Insightful and intensely personal, All Roads Are Good weaves together a rich tapestry of old and new Indian folkways.
