WINTER
GETAWAY "DOWN UNDER" A
GREAT WINTER GETAWAY "DOWN UNDER" When
winter's dreary skies and blustery winds start to make even the most hardy northerner
dream of an endless summer, it's time to head south for a little respite. And
not just south of the border, but really south, as in "down under" the island
continent of Australia. | ![]() |
| The trip begins with two days of hiking amid the towering red cliffs, crashing waterfalls, and lush rainforests of the country's Blue Mountains, so called for their enveloping bluish eucalyptus mist. Then it's a short hop to Budderoo National Park for a walk in the rainforest and on to Kangaroo Valley on the edge of Morton National Park. Morton is home to an intriguing array of local flora and fauna, and here participants spend a tranquil day canoeing down a river with hopes of seeing native bird life as well as gray wallabies, sun dragons (a large local lizard), and possibly a platypus. After a ramble through Australia's highest peaks, the dazzling Snowy Mountains (a climb of Mount Kosciusko - the tallest peak on the Australian continent at 7,300 feet - and an afternoon of horseback riding is included), the group heads to the island of Tasmania. Once a dreaded British penal colony, Tasmania remains pristine and sparsely populated and boasts some of Australia's finest bushwalking trails. Participants hike part of the rugged Cradle Mountain circuit and along the Freycinet Peninsula, which offers spectacular coastline views and a chance to see colorful wattlebirds, cockatoos, orchids, and other Aussie beauties. This trip is best suited for active individuals who love to hike (most hikes are five to six hours in length). The 15-day trip departs March 9, November 16, and December 21, 2002. Land cost begins at $3,590.00 for a group of 11-14 members.
