54TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF HOUSES & GARDENS NEW ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHT CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA'S 54TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF HOUSES & GARDENS Visitors from across the United States and abroad are invited to explore the interiors and gardens of some of the finest homes in America, during Charleston's 54th Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, March 15 through April 14, 2001. Highlighting this year's program will be a series of luncheons, teas and wine tastings that will not only be delicious, but entertaining and educational as well. Sponsored by Historic Charleston Foundation, the Festival features tours of approximately 150 privately owned houses in 11 historic neighborhoods, strolls through distinctive private gardens during the peak of the blooming season, and the popular Lowcountry oyster roasts at Drayton Hall Plantation. These self-guided walking tours allow guests to meander at their own pace, with volunteers at each location to interpret the site. |

The Festival's new Luncheon Lecture Series will feature three-course meals, wine and presentations by noted Charleston authors and historians. Glorious Gardens Luncheons, set at nationally acclaimed Magnolias restaurant, will feature local garden experts and dishes prepared by award-winning chef Donald Barickman each Thursday. Other luncheons will focus on the city's architecture, history and decorative arts at three of Charleston's most renowned restaurants: Anson, High Cotton and McCrady's. All authors will be available for book signings after their presentation. The historic Governor's House Inn will be the setting for two afternoon teas, featuring a history of tea and its proper preparation by Clive Hale, president of Hale Tea, a product licensed by Historic Charleston Foundation. Blue Heron Wine and Beverage will present two Italian wine tastings in the Wentworth Mansion's circa 1886 courtyard. Another wine tasting is scheduled in one of Charleston's newer venues, Bennett's on the Market. Seating is limited and early reservations are strongly encouraged for all events. Luncheons are $40 per person; afternoon teas and wine tastings are $25 per person. Guided "Tours with the Experts" around the Old and Historic District are offered daily (except Sundays) at 9 a.m. Tickets are $15.
