| Parents have the option of joining their children for their last two nights at Grootbos and can take part in a six-night family expedition to see some of the principal attractions of Southern Africa. The cost of this expedition is from US $3,700.00 per adult, including two nights at Grootbos, and US $1,070.00 per child.
Grootbos is South Africa's premier marine and floral destination. Situated less than 2 hours from Cape Town between mountains and sea, Grootbos offers stylish 5-star accommodations, African cuisine and nature based tourism activities that have been described as world class. Experienced field guides with knowledge of the local history, fauna and flora host all activities. Children at the Summer Camp will explore the 800 year-old Milkwood Forests, plant one of their own trees, collect and press local fynbos plants, collect bugs and make insect field studies. There will be guided horse riding and riding lessons. Field trips will visit the 18-mile white sandy beach, collecting shells, exploring rock pools, visiting prehistoric caves and learning more about their history. There will be a visit to the local Masakhane township to interact with the children and be part of a local soccer match to celebrate the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Visits will be made to the Flower Valley Cooperative and the Green Futures Horticultural & Life Skills College. African artisans will teach beading and wire bending: items will be made and taken home as souvenirs. There will be guided bird watching. Children will learn the African Gumboot dance and enjoy an Independence Day Fancy Dress party African style. There will be a boat trip to see a seal colony of 60,000 African Jackass Penguins, gigantic Southern Right Whales and a Great White Shark. Cooking lessons will explain traditional cooking methods for African bread and demonstrate the traditional African barbecue known as "braai". Telescopes at Grootbos enable youngsters and adults to take a learn about the astronomy of the southern hemisphere. A photographic workshop with disposable cameras provided will produce photos to be placed into albums made of handmade recycled paper which can be taken home as souvenirs. Made from stone, thatch and timber, Grootbos Lodge is stylish and modern with a strong African feel. The library offers a superb collection of nature books and there is a natural rock pool. Each suite has one or two bedrooms, each with a large en suite bathroom and open plan lounge. Telephone, fax and e-mail services are available. Parents joining their children at Grootbos will travel to Cape Town, where they will experience two full days of sightseeing, staying at the elegant Cape Grace Hotel, before flying to Ngala Game Lodge in Kruger National Park for a three day safari.
