MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM CONSERVATION EXHIBITS AT THE MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM IN MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Tunas, sea turtles and sharks are magnificent ocean animals. Seahorses are exotic and fascinating fish. Yet the very characteristics that make these sea creatures attractive to humans also puts them at risk from harmful fishing practices and habitat destruction. These amazing animals and the threats they face in the wild are the focus of two new exhibits that open May 19, 2001 at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California. "Vanishing Wildlife: Saving Tunas, Turtles and Sharks" features a stunning and previously unseen view into the aquarium's million-gallon Outer Bay display; "Saving Seahorses" presents captivating seahorses from around the world. Both exhibits also tell how people are working to protect tunas, turtles, sharks and seashores in the wild. |

The new window into the Outer Bay, in a gallery never before open to the public, is 25 feet long by 10 feet tall and slanted at a 60-degree angle above visitors' heads. This underwater perspective puts visitors both beneath the fish in the exhibit and eye to eye with impressive yellowfin and bluefin tuna, soufin sharks and the passing ocean fish. The exhibit is home to a wide range of other open ocean life, including the only oceanic whitetip shark at any aquarium in the world, pilotfish, green sea turtles, bonito and dorado (dolphin fish). Other animals are added as aquarium staff overcomes the challenges of displaying open ocean fishes that have never been featured at any other aquarium. "Saving Seahorses" will delight visitors as it introduces them to six different varieties of these charming fish: potbelly seahorse, cape seahorse, tiger tail seahorse, longsnout seahorse, Pacific seahorse and dwarf seahorse. Beautiful tropical displays will show off these unusual creatures. For more information on these and other events, please call (831) 648-4888 or visit http://www.montereybayaquarium.org.
