Beach Music Weekend - May 17-20, 2001. This blowout kicks off Thursday night on a huge stage overlooking the 29th Street oceanfront with free concerts by popular bands including the Embers, the Chairman of the Board, and Virginia Beach's own Bill Deal and the Rhondels, all performing a groovy repertoire of beach music. Contest and parties continue through Sunday afternoon. Remember the Music: A Tribute to Our Military Heroes - May 25-28, 2001. Memorial Day Weekend presents an opportunity to remember the men and women who fought to protect our country, and Virginia Beach hosts a special celebration with "Remember the Music: A Tribute to Our Military Heroes." This festival features three days of dancing and live performances by bands playing tunes heard during the last three wars. Friday pays tribute to WWII veterans with an explosion of Big Band and swing, while Saturday's line-up-including The Platters-will honor those who fought in Korea. On Sunday, revelers can groove to the psychedelic sounds of Felix Cavaliere's Rascals, reminiscent of the Vietnam era. Viva Elvis VII Festival - June 1-3, 2001. Bring out those blue suede shoes and boogie with Elvis Presley look-alikes in a tribute to the one and only King of Rock n' Roll. The three-day event pays homage to "the King," with all sorts of hip-swinging fun including free concerts by Elvis impersonators, a lip sync contest, an Elvis parade and a landing of the Skydiving Kings in Elvis attire. Live performances include appearances by Elvis' cousin, Jerry Presley, backed by the Jordanaires, Elvis' original backup quartet.
