The 900-passenger Regal Empress stops first in Newport, Rhode Island, settled by Quakers in the 17th century and a summer resort in the 19th century for some of America's wealthiest families. They built extravagant mansions, including Astor's Beechwood Mansion where actors portray the Astor family. The city has the Country's oldest Quaker meeting house, built in 1699, and its oldest synagogue, dating from 1759. St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada, is next, site of Canada's oldest active farmers market and the New Brunswick Museum, with displays ranging from fine art to "Delilah", a preserved 45-foot Northern Right Whale. An exceptional view of the bay can be seen from the Portland Observatory in Portland, Maine, the third stop. The Portland Museum of Art houses one of New England's finest art collections. Before returning to New York, the ship spends a full day at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, an island of Victorian gingerbread houses, well-preserved mansions, beautiful public beaches, cafes, restaurants and shops selling local arts and crafts. Optional excursions include tours of the Newport mansions built by the captains of industry in the late 19th-century; "Ride the Rapids" in St. Johns, a thrilling water ride in the Reversing Falls of the Bay of Fundy whose 28-foot tides are the highest in the world; and an escorted tour of Martha's Vineyard. Early-booking discounts and "Kids Sail Free" are capacity controlled and subject to change.
