FIRST NIGHT - PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND 2002

Festivities begin in the afternoon and play continuously at various downtown sites, and there will be an impressive fireworks display at the strike of midnight. Highlights include:
  • Luma, Theater of Light: A magical, visual treat, the ingenious Luma transforms a darkened theatre into spatial canvas, where illuminated objects and characters paint mysterious worlds. 3 shows at the Providence Performing Arts Center.
  • Kenya Wizard Acrobats: Awe-inspiring feats, flips, and physical phenomena by the finest of world-touring African acrobats dazzle at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
  • The Second Hand: This boisterous, gymnastic trio fuses Chinese acrobatics and martial arts with ballet and theatrical humor in an unclassifiable family performance art. The exuberant display of physical prowess stretches the audience's imagination to new limits in three wacky shows at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
